Artprojx and Nuova Icona present Broken Voices Venice, the first of four new sound pieces by the British artist Terry Smith performed live by the internationally renowned singer Linda Hirst to coincide with the 52nd Venice Biennale, 2007 at St George’s la chiesa Anglicana di Venezia. Broken Voices is a new and exciting intervention into a musical score and the process of performance, which explores the ephemeral notion of sound by deconstructing an existing piece of music Duo Seraphim, for 3 Voci, by Monteverdi.

The work centres on Venice, a place intersected by canals, a myriad of alleys and streets; this becomes the focus of Smith’s inspiration, which he describes as a dark place full of light. The city also lends itself to the construction and filming of Smith’s new multi-screened sound and video work to be premiered at the De La Warr Pavilion as part of their Autumn season.

Like all of Smiths projects Broken Voices begins with no set direction, where he employs a process of mapping as he goes along. The work develops by making marks and erasing with equal measure, making mistakes, taking wrong turns, and for a while getting completely lost. Smith describes Venice as, ‘a place I know well. It’s a place to get lost in, a place that breaks up your thoughts and your imagination. Like any city, it takes time to join up all the bits and whenever I look at a map, I get lost.’

A recorded version will be presented by The Eagle Gallery at the Pond Gallery in Snape to coincide with the famous Aldeburgh Music Festival, Suffolk. The second movement is presented by Artprojx at Greenland Street, Liverpool, 4 July; the third movement is presented by Artprojx at the Prince Charles Cinema, London; the fourth movement will be performed at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, September 2007 along with the Triple Echo exhibition.

Broken Voices has been commissioned by the De La Warr Pavilion as part of the group exhibition Triple Echo, September 2007. It is supported by Artprojx, Artupdate, British Council, De La Warr Pavilion, The Eagle Gallery, Greenland Street, The Hinrichsen Foundation, Nuova Icona, Prince Charles Cinema and Saint George’s Church Venice.

Terry Smith has over the last twelve years created a series of building interventions in domestic and industrial buildings, and in Galleries and Museums worldwide from the British Museum to MACBA in Barcelona. Taking things apart has always been a preoccupation for Smith and is a method and process that allows him to continually challenge his understanding of what a medium can do and how the meaning of a work can be understood.

Ian Dearden is an accomplished composer and musician and is a renowned sound engineer who has worked with many composers including Steve Reich, John Cage and Stockhausen.

The lead vocalist Linda Hirst is celebrated internationally for her experimental approach to music and performance. She is head of vocals at Trinity College, London and has performed with the Michael Nyman band and John Cage.

Clare Fitzpatrick is a freelance curator, for the past seven years she has worked in the contemporary visual arts with emerging and established artists on new and innovative projects and is currently Gallery Manager (Projects) at Matt’s Gallery.
